How it lives

North Main runs to Craftsman bungalows and Tudor, under a canopy that new development cannot manufacture. New construction here happens as infill, not as subdivision: scattered, priced individually, often beside a house eighty years older. The street matters more than the neighborhood name; a home on a quiet interior street behaves differently from one closer to Stone Avenue or the Wade Hampton traffic. Buyers who liked condo living in North Hills, or who want newer walkable living, tend to look downtown or on North Main first.

The neighborhood starts at Stone Avenue and its streets walk straight into downtown. Most of this day happens on foot, and the car stays in the driveway until the airport.

Coffee on Main, then the falls
Methodical Coffee on Main Street, then down into Falls Park and out onto the Liberty Bridge over the Reedy River falls, the span the city built after it tore out the four-lane bridge that ran over the water. Publix and Harris Teeter are two and three minutes away by car, closer on a bike.
Saturday
The market under your window
The TD Saturday Market runs the length of Main Street, May through October: peaches, cut flowers and the closest thing Greenville has to a town square. From November into January the Ice on Main rink sets up on Main Street.
Midday
The Swamp Rabbit Trail
From downtown the trail runs more than thirty miles, flat and paved, north toward Travelers Rest. Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery sits on the way, five minutes from here, for produce and the butcher counter.

The houses
Craftsman bungalows and Tudors on tree-lined streets, infill new build arriving between them, and the Col. Elias Earle district's 1915 to 1930 Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival houses, with Whitehall and the Earle Town House from the early 1800s. Exterior changes inside the historic district need a Certificate of Appropriateness.

Greenville's first Michelin star is at 18 North Main: Chef Joe Cash's Parisian bistro crossed with an American steakhouse. Resy opens its book at the start of each month for the month after, so a Saturday in November is booked in the first days of October.
